In 1954, Tom’s father, William Lee Gaines Sr., entered the underground utility construction business with the formation of Gaines & Co. which is currently run by Tom's older brothers Lee and Myrt. The editors of the Engineering News-Record recently rated Gaines & Co. as Maryland's #1 underground utility contractor in their ranking of the top 600 Specialty Contractors in the U.S. In addition, ENR has named Gaines & Co. to their list of the Top 20 Utility Contractors in the nation for the past ten years.
